V. Shankar was until June 2015 the Chief Executive Officer, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Americas, and a member of the board of Standard Chartered Bank PLC. He has recently resigned from the Bank to start a private equity fund that will focus on growth opportunities across the emerging markets of Africa, Middle East and Asia.
Shankar is a non-executive director of Majid Al Futtaim Holding LLC, Dubai and a member of the advisory board of the Institute of Societal Leadership at Singapore Management University. He is also a trustee of the Asia Society, New York, Singapore Indian Development Association and the Varkey Foundation, UAE. He is a member of the steering committee that established the Indian Heritage Centre in Singapore and Vice Chair of the Future of Banking Council which forms a part of the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum.
Shankar's past appointments in a non-executive capacity on various institutions and committees include the board of the Inland Revenue Authority Singapore; the Economic Strategies Committee and the National Integration Council constituted by the government of Singapore; the Sub-Saharan Advisory Board of the Exim Bank USA; and, the financial centre task force appointed by the Treasurer of the State of California.
Shankar is often featured and quoted in international and regional print media and television. He has been consistently ranked among the most admired CEOs in the Middle East. In 2015 Forbes Middle East ranked Shankar the #1 Indian leader in the executive category. He was awarded the Public Service Medal by the government of Singapore in 2014. He has a BSc in Physics from Loyola College, Chennai and a MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
